{"id":180,"date":"2009-03-26T07:16:52","date_gmt":"2009-03-26T14:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=180"},"modified":"2009-03-26T07:16:52","modified_gmt":"2009-03-26T14:16:52","slug":"mastering-lateral-change-of-direction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=180","title":{"rendered":"Mastering Lateral Change of Direction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most common things I see when training athletes is the inability to control their body in space as they transition from deceleration to acceleration and move in a different direction.\u00a0 They often stand too upright, add extra steps, use bad angles and fail to\u00a0apply force to\u00a0the ground efficiently to propel them forward.<\/p>\n<p>Early on, I implement a 2 cone shuffle drill to teach proper body awareness, how to plant correctly and most importantly how to move as fast as possible.\u00a0 It is best to follow a set predictable sequance at first to ensure proper motor learning.\u00a0 Here is an example:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Slow speed with verbal cues throughout (to maintain athletic posture, foot position, body angle, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Half speed with no verbal cues (correct with demonstration and verbal feedback afterward)<\/li>\n<li>Full speed with no verbal cues and shorter cones (still correct after the drill as needed)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>These sequences are all predicatble in nature.\u00a0 Once the athlete masters form and body control, you can begin to ask them to react to both <strong>auditory<\/strong> and <strong>visual<\/strong> cues in a more random nature.\u00a0 This will force them to improve reaction time and more colsely mimic sport situations.\u00a0 In the video clip, I shuffle with quick steps\u00a0at first\u00a0and then increase my stride\u00a0toward the end.\u00a0 You will need to\u00a0decide whether you want to\u00a0work on precise footwork (for small space work) or more powerful strides for open space explosion.\u00a0 I think both are relevant and worthy to be trained.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"viddlervideo-81013-731bf19f\" class=\"viddlervideo\"><p><a href=\"#viddlervideo-81013-731bf19f\" onclick=\"loadViddlerVideo('81013','731bf19f','player',437,370);\" title=\"Click to play this video.\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"437\" height=\"370\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn-thumbs.viddler.com\/e2\/thumbnail_2_731bf19f.jpg\" alt=\"Video thumbnail.\" \/><\/a><\/p><p><a href=\"#viddlervideo-81013-731bf19f\" onclick=\"loadViddlerVideo('81013','731bf19f','player',437,370);\" return false;\">Click to play this video.<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>Next week, I will turn my attention to ACL injury prevention as Spring soccer is upon us and share some tips and strategies to prevent these injuries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most common things I see when training athletes is the inability to control their body in space as they transition from deceleration to acceleration and move in a different direction.\u00a0 They often stand too upright, add extra steps, use bad angles and fail to\u00a0apply force to\u00a0the ground efficiently to propel them forward.
