{"id":185,"date":"2009-03-31T13:57:34","date_gmt":"2009-03-31T20:57:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=185"},"modified":"2009-03-31T13:57:34","modified_gmt":"2009-03-31T20:57:34","slug":"acl-injury-prevention-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=185","title":{"rendered":"ACL Injury Prevention (Part 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may be well aware that ACL injuries have reached epidemic proportions in our country.\u00a0 They affect females more often than males (up to 8 times more often in some studies).\u00a0 The good news is that research reviews have generally been positive in regard to prevention programs reducing injury rates.<\/p>\n<p>So, what exactly is a prevention program?\u00a0 It must be holistic in nature yet very precise as athletes and coaches have little extra time each week to add more exercise.\u00a0 It begins in the off-season and pre-season, but should definitely continue in-season as well.\u00a0 Ideally, it should consist of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pre-season screening to assess bio mechanical flaws, as well as strength, power and balance deficits<\/li>\n<li>Proper dynamic mobility and warm-up exercises<\/li>\n<li>Essential strength exercises<\/li>\n<li>Balance training<\/li>\n<li>Plyometrics with emphasis on jump landing technique<\/li>\n<li>Agility drills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is essential to train the neuromuscular pathways to ensure critical development of motor learning and feedback loops that are in the best interests of our kids.\u00a0 To that end, I believe there are fundamental drills that should be implemented.\u00a0 Today, I included one of these drills.\u00a0 It is simple\u00a0but very effective in teaching athletes to reduce valgus moments at the knee.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"viddlervideo-92051-4375c054\" class=\"viddlervideo\"><p><a href=\"#viddlervideo-92051-4375c054\" onclick=\"loadViddlerVideo('92051','4375c054','player',437,370);\" title=\"Click to play this video.\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"437\" height=\"370\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn-thumbs.viddler.com\/e2\/thumbnail_2_4375c054.jpg\" alt=\"Video thumbnail.\" \/><\/a><\/p><p><a href=\"#viddlervideo-92051-4375c054\" onclick=\"loadViddlerVideo('92051','4375c054','player',437,370);\" return false;\">Click to play this video.<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p>I begin with 3-5 reps on each leg emphasizing low intensity hops and strict form.\u00a0 Once the athlete demonstrates good form with ease, you may increase the intensity of the hops, eventually advancing from alternate leg landing to takeoff\u00a0and landing on the same leg for max difficulty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You may be well aware that ACL injuries have reached epidemic proportions in our country.\u00a0 They affect females more often than males (up to 8 times more often in some studies).\u00a0 The good news is that research reviews have generally been positive in regard to prevention programs reducing injury rates.
