Next, slowly sweep the right arm up overhead and around the body as you attempt to place the torso\/back on the floor. \u00a0The finish position for the right arm will be reaching the right hand and arm up behind the back.<\/p>\n<p>Exhale as you perform the sweeping motion and hold the end position for 2 seconds. \u00a0Reverse direction and return to the start position. \u00a0Perform 5-10 repetitions on each side.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Application<\/span>: Limited shoulder mobility is a common finding, especially among male clientele with tightness in the pecs, lats and posterior shoulder. \u00a0Asymmetry with respect to mobility is common with greater difficulty found trying to reach the dominant arm up behind the back on the FMS shoulder mobility screen. \u00a0This exercise will help improve thoracic spine motion and shoulder mobility. \u00a0The focus should be on strict form and proper stabilization to avoid unwanted motion. \u00a0Pinning the pad (or towel roll) to the floor will help ensure better stabilization.<\/p>\n<p>If hypomibility is an issue and clients score a 1, foam rolling the pec minor\/major, latissimus dorsi and the posterior rotator cuff musculature prior to performing the exercise will be helpful. \u00a0Stability training can be added in later once the soft tissue mobility restrictions and movement pattern is improving.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The shoulder mobility screen in the FMS often reveals side-to-side asymmetries. \u00a0It is more common to see hypermobility in female clientele, while their male counterparts exhibit more hypomobility. \u00a0Overhead athletes tend to demonstrate excessive horizontal external rotation and a relative loss of internal rotation on the dominant side. \u00a0This hypomobility can be detrimental to overhead [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[109,4,7,8,36,11],"tags":[330,163,289,21,24],"class_list":["post-1947","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-flexibility","category-health","category-injury-prevention","category-rehab","category-shoulder","category-shoulder-injuries","tag-corrective-exercises","tag-shoulder-exercises","tag-shoulder-mobility","tag-shoulder-pain","tag-shoulder-rehab"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.10 -
