{"id":212,"date":"2009-04-19T12:51:48","date_gmt":"2009-04-19T19:51:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=212"},"modified":"2009-04-19T12:54:10","modified_gmt":"2009-04-19T19:54:10","slug":"knee-arthritis-and-pronation-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=212","title":{"rendered":"Knee Arthritis and Pronation (Part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, I am including a picture to better reveal the physical effects of pronation on the knee joint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-213\" title=\"pronation\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/pronation.bmp\" alt=\"Effects of Pronation\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, in this photo of the right knee it points out ITB friction syndrome (runner&#8217;s knee).\u00a0 You can see how force is transmitted up the kinetic chain based on bio mechanical alignment.\u00a0 With increased internal tibial rotation,\u00a0ITB irritation\u00a0is a distinct possibility.\u00a0 In addition, it is important to note that this pronation also leads to increased valgus moments (knee caves inward) leading to added stress to the knee.\u00a0 It may also create increase shear force along the lateral patella and compressive force along the lateral knee joint.<\/p>\n<p>This abnormal force transmission is one of the primary reasons runners with overpronation experience ITB and lateral knee pain.\u00a0 Aside from utilizing arch supports, getting proper footwear and gradually increasing mileage, there are some\u00a0essential strengthening and stretching exercises to include if you have overpronation issues including:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>ITB stretching<\/li>\n<li>Hamstring and calf stretching<\/li>\n<li>Quadriceps strengthening<\/li>\n<li>Gluteus medius strengthening<\/li>\n<li>Single leg (knee bent) balance and reaching<\/li>\n<li>Single leg calf raises to increase arch support by strengthening the posterior tibialis<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In the next post, I will review Chondromalacia (softening of the cartilage behind the kneecap) and patello-femoral arthritis, a condition that affects many women over the age of 30.\u00a0 I also wanted to let you know I will be releasing a DVD on knee arthritis in the next few weeks.\u00a0 If you read my blog, you will be entitled to a special pre-release offer as well.\u00a0 Stay tuned for more details.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, I am including a picture to better reveal the physical effects of pronation on the knee joint.\u00a0 Now, in this photo of the right knee it points out ITB friction syndrome (runner&#8217;s knee).\u00a0 You can see how force is transmitted up the kinetic chain based on bio mechanical alignment.\u00a0 With increased internal tibial rotation,\u00a0ITB [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[32,4,7,31,8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-212","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-arthritis","category-health","category-injury-prevention","category-knee","category-rehab"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.10 -
