{"id":258,"date":"2009-06-02T21:33:28","date_gmt":"2009-06-03T04:33:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=258"},"modified":"2009-06-02T21:33:28","modified_gmt":"2009-06-03T04:33:28","slug":"total-hamstring-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=258","title":{"rendered":"Total Hamstring Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a former client of mine email the other day and ask for some hamstring exercises to relieve stiffness and soreness.\u00a0 This female athlete suffered two ACL tears in high school in the same knee within 7 months of each other.\u00a0 The first one was non-contact and the other was due\u00a0to a questionable slide tackle\u00a0 from a competitor only a few weeks after she returned ot full play.<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, I rehabbed her both times and she did great.\u00a0 This girl is a phenomenal athlete to be sure.\u00a0 She moves powerfully but gracefully at the saem time.\u00a0 She is going to play for Clemson next year on scholarship.\u00a0 After her surgery, she had some mild hamstring stiffness and soreness that eventually resolved in her return to play progression with me.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Since she needed some summer rehab exercises to knock out the stiffness again, I decided to put together a short video sequence of exercises for her to do.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, many field and court athletes suffer hamstring strains.\u00a0 This athlete just\u00a0had some residual stiffness related\u00a0to her surgeries.\u00a0 In the female athlete, we cant&#8217; spend enough time strengthening the hamstrings.\u00a0 However, here are some critical errors I have seen strength coaches and therapists make over the\u00a0years:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Focus too much on isolation exercises<\/li>\n<li>Rely too much on passive stretch\/pain response<\/li>\n<li>Under emphasize eccentric proximal closed chain work<\/li>\n<li>Disregard the rotational component of the hamstrings\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Any one or combination of these things will lead to incomplete rehab or almost guarantee a recurring injury and chronic inflammation.\u00a0 while I do not profess to know it all when it comes to these things, I do have firsthand experience (two torn hamstrings &#8211;
