{"id":337,"date":"2009-09-02T17:42:20","date_gmt":"2009-09-03T00:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=337"},"modified":"2009-09-02T17:42:20","modified_gmt":"2009-09-03T00:42:20","slug":"improving-speed-and-agility-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.brianschiff.com\/?p=337","title":{"rendered":"Improving Speed and Agility (Part 3)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">In the first two posts on this topic I have shown you predictive agility drills.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>These are great for the beginning phases of training and early pre-season conditioning.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>Once athletes understand how to move properly, it is time to turn your attention to reactive agility as this more appropriately mirrors sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">There are countless games and drills you can use with your athletes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>I have certain \u201cgo to\u201d drills if you will but am always looking for new ones or more importantly the best ones for each athlete or group of athletes I am working with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">Today I included some video taken from a field hockey speed clinic I held last month.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>A primary goal was to show the team a bevy of drills they could use to improve speed, agility and quickness.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Another important goal was to make the hard work seem FUN.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">You see I was an athlete not so long ago and I know athletes really don\u2019t get very excited about conditioning because that usually involves running, sweat and fatigue, right?\u00a0 So, anytime you can introduce games and competition to get maximal effort from your players or clients, it becomes a win-win for all involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">In the video clip today, you will see a friendly game of partner tag.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>Is this ingenious?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>Absolutely not.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>But, I strategically placed cones in a circle and then asked about 12 players to move within the circle trying not to get caught.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>Group one worked for 30 seconds while group two rested and then we switched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\"><div id=\"viddlervideo-58670-c54419af\" class=\"viddlervideo\"><p><a href=\"#viddlervideo-58670-c54419af\" onclick=\"loadViddlerVideo('58670','c54419af','player',437,370);\" title=\"Click to play this video.\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"437\" height=\"370\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn-thumbs.viddler.com\/e2\/thumbnail_2_c54419af.jpg\" alt=\"Video thumbnail.\" \/><\/a><\/p><p><a href=\"#viddlervideo-58670-c54419af\" onclick=\"loadViddlerVideo('58670','c54419af','player',437,370);\" return false;\">Click to play this video.<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">So, the pairs designated an initial \u201cit\u201d person and when the whistle blew the offensive player tried to evade while the defense pursued.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>This timed drill accomplishes all of the following great things:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"TEXT-INDENT: -0.25in; MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt 0.5in; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore\">\u00b7<span style=\"FONT: 7pt 'Times New Roman'\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">Great anaerobic conditioning<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">Some may say there is a greater risk of injury by confining the athletes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>I simply respond by saying the playing field has boundaries and in sport there will be collision at times as well as the very real need to maneuver tightly and quickly around people to avoid collisions and score.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>By the way, not one person collided in our drill.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>Safety or the lack thereof with tag comes down to preparation and proper instruction prior to starting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">Leading up to partner tag, I always\u00a0initiate more basic partner mirror drills for linear FW\/BW running, shuffles and combinations in a 4 cone\u00a0pattern (smaller area with only two at a time).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>These simpler condensed drills lay the foundation for an all out reactive game of tag.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 10pt\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial','sans-serif'\">The take home message is that reactive agility must be a progressive part of your field or court training to help refine proper movement patterns, reduce injury risk and maximize athletic performance.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">\u00a0 <\/span>In my final post, I will reveal an even\u00a0more specific reactive agility drill with an Olympic level fencer I am training for the 2012 games.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the first two posts on this topic I have shown you predictive agility drills.\u00a0 These are great for the beginning phases of training and early pre-season conditioning.\u00a0 Once athletes understand how to move properly, it is time to turn your attention to reactive agility as this more appropriately mirrors sport.
